With the current economic system the way it is, more and more families could use all the help they can get. In the typical Arlington style of community care, there’s a new way to help or be helped right in the community!
The Arlington Ministerial Association began discussions of the program last spring. They were quickly joined by parents, teachers, business leaders and community members and the Arlington Backpack Program was formed.
The way the program works is that a bag of pre-packaged food is packed by the backpack committee (and ANYONE who would like to help) on Thursday evening. The bags are delivered to the school on Friday morning. The bags will be given to the teachers who will them discretely place them in the child’s book bag. The website for the program is being completed as you read this and as soon as possible, this page will include a link to the site.
In the meantime, if you would like more information on how to help or be helped by the backpack program in Arlington, contact any of the pastors in town, school administration or Coleen Liebsch at 605-691-2007. In addition to the backpack program, food assistance is available through the food pantry located in the United Methodist Church. |
